letter from Montreal.
I'm sorry if all that blank space was worrisome: it was meant to be the internet equivalent of the paper wrapping all round the inside of the window when a shop is being readied for its grand re-opening. so [dropping the paper all about] ta da!

surprise, I'm in Montreal.
the cleverest among you deduced that already, of course.
It is utterly confounding to me that I spent much of Pop Montreal mooning over Montreal's streets and steps and churches like an ineffectual adolescent with a crush on the pretty smart girl. Now, four weeks later, here I am. I'm going to be living here for the next two months in fact, while I do nothing but talk/sleep/breathe radio. It is unusual for me to have nothing else to think about; it is heaven.
I arrived here late Sunday by bus from NYC with a bag of clothes, two more full of CDs and a cough that keeps threatening to become something more sinister. (Unbeknownst to me, I also arrived with a long-coveted record-reverser that my beloved snagged at the WFMU record fair and hid in my satchel.) I have spent my days invisibly. I have been relishing the feeling that I don't quite exist, which was only really broken late this afternoon while I was marching intently down Saint-Catharines and someone shouted "Helen!"
I'm here to program and host the first hour of BRAVE NEW WAVES; if you're curious you can tune in for the first one tonight on CBC Radio 2. It begins at 12:05, after the weather.

Bienvenue, Helen.
i can't stay up late and listen and i can't find a way to get the archived shows- helen, you are a genius, help me!!
love Julia
sadly, I am not a genius. but the genius currently at my house playing Settlers of Catan with my child has apparently figured out a way to record them: why don't you give him a call?
I saw you had Rafter on your music list. I recently entered the Asthmatic Kitty video contest and made a music video for a Rafter song. Lots of eggs flying through the woods.
I announced that contest as well; I think it was promoted heavily on Pitchfork. I was just listening to that record today and thinking about playing it on tomorrow night's show. Maybe I'll play that song. You'll just have to tune in...
